I think webdunce's answer makes a lot of sense. May I have a shot at it too? Perhaps the essence of the phrase could be translated 'In the sin itself, (people) do their own penance.' (As in, suffer the consequences.) Maybe equivalent to the English 'Sin bears its own punishment.'
