it is possible to install it using the live-cd, you just boot it up as you would on a normal PC. when it gets to the garbled part do ctrl-alt-f1, perform all of the instructions for configuring X, using sudo. do ctrl-alt-f7 to go back into the main screen (still garbled), do ctrl-alt-backspace to stop X. do sudo startx, and install ubuntu from the administation menu in system. Once ubuntu is installed, follow the instructions already posted here to configure it again. it worked for me.
